The Other Boleyn Girl (2008)

I didn't hear very many good things about this movie, so I decided to put it off for the cheap theater, but then I think it wasn't exactly popular at the cheap theater, so I decided to put it off for DVD. But then when I really thought about it, I realized that my queue is already far too long to be selecting movies that don't have great ratings. That may be harsh, but I feel like I'm always running to try and catch up with the other movie lovers around me, who have seen far more movies than I have, and in the long run, a movie like The Other Boleyn girl just isn't very significant, and isn't likely to come up in future conversations with anyone. Well, then I was playing WordTwist (love that game) on my laptop near the TV and noticed it was going to be on, so I switched the channel and decided to watch it in the background of my WordTwist game.
Surprisingly, the movie wasn't as bad as I had been led to believe. It's still not a significant piece of film making, but it is entertaining and good enough to look at for a couple of hours. I eventually put the laptop down and followed along with the story of the Boleyn sisters, who were rivals for the affections of King Henry VIII. Now, I'm sure the writer took some dramatic license, and I'm positive that Natalie Portman just came across like Natalie Portman transported to the time of the Tudors, but I was surprised to find that I actually felt something for Scarlett Johansson's character, Mary Boelyn. She was already married when the king took notice of her, and so her character is a little bit more complex than her sister, Anne's.
The sets and costumes of the story are capable enough, and the conflicts and themes are pretty much what one might expect since we all know the story of Henry VIII and his quest to produce an heir. But there were some human touches to it, and actually I liked a couple of the moments between Scarlett Johansson and Eric Bana. Will I tell you to go out and rent it, or will I ever watch it again? Probably not, but I wasn't totally sorry I saw it. How's that for a quote on the DVD cover? "Jeri Price exclaims, 'I wasn't totally sorry I saw it!'"
